Zafiros win the inaugural Cornish Pub Sevens event, sponsored by St Austell Brewery, held at Falmouth Rugby Club on the 5th August 2006.
After a pulsating final match, against a much-fancied Dog Pound Crew side representing the Waterman's pub, the Zafiros team clinched a 24-12 victory to secure the £500 prize money ahead of the seven other sides participating.
The Cup Final was preceded by the Plate Competition Final, which was keenly contested by the Wodehouse Arms and The Prince of Wales Pubs. Rivalry intensified as both sides contained a number of players form the host Rugby Club.
In a rather one-way game however, The Prince of Wales Pub ran out comfortable 35-0 victors.
After attracting sides from around the Duchy, the tournament was played in great rugby spirit and was a taste of things to come according to Brand Manager of Falmouth Rugby Club and event co-organiser
Danny Valentine Fernando-Trick,
"This was the first time we had attempted something like this and I am delighted that everyone's hard work paid off. On the back of this success the Club will definitely host a similar tournament next season with interest already showing from outside the county."
As part of her sponsorship, Jayne Griggs, (pictured) new Landlady of the Prince of Wales Pub in Falmouth, presented tournament referees, both Plate and Cup finalists with individual awards and the Winners with the Pub Sevens Cup.
